History
The
art of Thanka painting is very old & was practiced as early as 3rd
century B.C. in Nepal
& Tibet.
Introduction
The word "Thanka" is believed to have come from the Tibetan
word "thang yig" means written record.
Varieties
Colourful hand paintings are generally
representing Buddhist & Hindu Gods, Goddesses, Meditating-Buddha
& his life cycle, Wheel of life, Mandala, Bhairab, Exotic-pictures,
etc. Two basic types of thanka- paintings are generally available, Tibetan
style & Newars style (Paubha) each having its own fundamental style
of painting.
Production
Thankas are generally painted on cotton cloth or paper with natural
(stone / vegetable ) & artificial (chemical) colours, while gold
& silver painted thankas are very standerd & expensive.
Export
Thanka are hang in the shrines of monasteries & private home as
religious teaching materials & decoration. They are exported to
Taiwan, Germany, Korea, Canada & USA.
